Woman holding a potted plant — Brazilian wax preparation tips from Soluna Vee Spa, Colorado Springs
Preparing for your Brazilian wax is just as important as the service itself — what you do in the 48 hours before makes all the difference.

Summer in Colorado Springs means pools, hiking, lake days, and a whole lot less clothing. It also means more people are booking their first — or their next — Brazilian wax. And while a Brazilian wax is one of the most requested services at Soluna Vee Spa, it's also one of the most misunderstood when it comes to preparation.

Most clients show up not knowing that what they do in the 48 to 72 hours before their appointment directly affects how smooth their results are, how much discomfort they feel during the service, and how their skin recovers afterward. Summer adds another layer of complexity — heat, sweat, sun exposure, and chlorine all change how your skin behaves.

Here's what you actually need to know before your Brazilian wax appointment this summer. Whether it's your first Brazilian wax in Colorado Springs or your tenth, preparation is what separates a great result from a frustrating one.

Hair length matters more than you think

This is the number one thing that affects your wax results. Hair needs to be at least a quarter inch long — roughly the length of a grain of rice — for the wax to grip it properly. Too short and the wax can't grab the hair at the root, which leads to breakage, missed patches, and more passes over the same skin. More passes means more irritation, and in a sensitive area like the bikini zone, that adds up fast.

If you've been shaving, stop at least two to three weeks before your appointment. If you're coming in for a regular maintenance wax, your timing is usually on track — but if you've gone longer than usual, that's fine too. Hair that's longer than half an inch can be trimmed at the appointment.

The mistake most people make is shaving right before because they feel self-conscious. Please don't. Your esthetician has seen everything, and short hair makes the service harder on your skin, not easier.

Exfoliate — but not right before

Exfoliating two to three days before your appointment helps loosen dead skin cells that can trap hairs and lead to ingrown hairs after waxing. In summer especially, when sweat and sunscreen can clog pores around the hair follicle, a gentle exfoliation beforehand makes a real difference in how cleanly the hair is removed.

What you should not do is exfoliate the day of your appointment. Freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive, and waxing on top of it increases the chance of irritation, redness, or even surface lifting — especially in a delicate area like the bikini zone.

A gentle scrub or exfoliating glove two to three days out is all you need. Skip anything with harsh acids or strong actives in the 48 hours before your service.

Hydrate your skin — and your body

Dry skin and waxing don't mix well. When skin is dehydrated, it's less supple, which makes hair removal more uncomfortable and can cause the wax to grip skin instead of hair. In Colorado's dry climate — and especially in summer heat — this is something every client needs to pay attention to year-round, not just before appointments.

Moisturize daily in the week leading up to your appointment, but skip the lotion on the day of. Product on the skin at the time of waxing creates a barrier that can prevent the wax from adhering properly.

Drinking enough water also matters more than people realize. Hydrated skin from the inside responds better to waxing and recovers faster. If you've been outdoors in the Colorado heat, make sure you're replenishing fluids in the days before your appointment.

Avoid sun exposure and heat before your appointment

This one surprises a lot of people. If you've been in the sun, in a hot tub, or at a pool the day before your wax, your skin is likely more sensitized than usual — even if you don't feel it. Sunburned or heat-stressed skin is not in the right condition for waxing, and a good esthetician will ask you to reschedule rather than risk irritating already-compromised skin.

Plan your pool days and outdoor activities for after your appointment, not before. Give your skin at least 24 hours of calm before you come in. This is especially important in Colorado Springs summers, where UV intensity is higher at elevation than most people expect.

What to expect during your first appointment

If this is your first Brazilian wax, it's normal to feel nervous. Here's what actually happens: you'll be in a private room, draped appropriately, and your esthetician will walk you through each step. The service typically takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on hair density and growth patterns.

Hard wax is used for Brazilian services — not soft wax with strips. Hard wax grips the hair, not the skin, which makes it significantly more comfortable for sensitive areas. At Soluna Vee Spa, premium wax products are used specifically chosen for their performance on delicate skin.

Some discomfort is normal, especially the first time. Skin in the bikini area is sensitive, and the first wax is typically the most uncomfortable because the hair follicle hasn't been trained yet. By the second and third appointments, most clients are surprised by how much easier it gets. The hair grows back finer and sparser over time, which means less resistance and less discomfort with each visit.

If you're anxious, take an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment. Avoid caffeine beforehand if you tend to be sensitive — it can increase skin sensitivity.

How to prevent ingrown hairs after your wax

Ingrown hairs are one of the most common concerns after a Brazilian wax, and summer makes them more likely if you're not careful. Sweat, friction from clothing, and sun exposure can all contribute to hairs curling back into the skin instead of growing out cleanly.

The best defense is a consistent aftercare routine. Starting 48 hours after your wax, exfoliate the area two to three times a week using a gentle scrub or exfoliating glove. This keeps dead skin from building up over the follicle and trapping the new hair growth.

Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing as much as possible in the days after your wax. Tight waistbands and synthetic fabrics create friction and trap heat — both of which increase the likelihood of ingrowns. After a day at the pool or beach, rinse the area thoroughly to remove chlorine and salt before it dries on the skin.

If you're prone to ingrown hairs, ask about targeted aftercare products at your appointment. There are options that can significantly reduce the occurrence without irritating the skin.

Brazilian waxing is for everyone

Brazilian waxing is not just for women. More men are booking Brazilian and full body waxing services than ever before — and the same prep rules apply regardless of gender. Hair length, exfoliation, hydration, and aftercare matter just as much. If you have questions about what the service involves or what to expect for your first appointment, reach out before you book — I'm happy to walk you through it.

What to wear and summer aftercare

Loose, breathable clothing is the move on appointment day. After a Brazilian wax, your skin needs airflow — tight waistbands, synthetic fabrics, and anything that rubs can cause irritation in the hours following your service. Cotton underwear and loose pants or a skirt are ideal.

Avoid working out immediately after your wax. Sweat on freshly waxed skin can cause irritation and increase the risk of ingrown hairs. Give it at least 24 hours before you hit the gym or go for a run.

For the first 48 hours after your wax: no sun exposure on the waxed area, no pools or hot tubs, no tight clothing, and no heavy lotions or fragranced products on the skin. After that window, keep the area moisturized and stay consistent with your exfoliation routine.

If you're spending time in the sun, protect the skin. Freshly waxed skin is more susceptible to darkening with UV exposure — especially for clients with medium to deeper skin tones. This is not the week to skip sunscreen.

A note on consistency

A single Brazilian wax gives you smooth results for two to four weeks depending on your hair growth cycle. But clients who wax consistently over several months notice something else: the hair grows back finer, sparser, and softer over time. That's because repeated waxing gradually weakens the hair follicle.

The jump from shaving to waxing can feel uncomfortable at first — that's completely normal. By your second and third appointments, most clients notice a significant difference in how the service feels and how long the results last. Consistency is what makes the long-term difference.

If you've been curious about getting a Brazilian wax but haven't taken the step yet, summer is genuinely a great time to start. You'll have smooth results when you want them most, and you'll be building a routine that pays off all year.
