Smooth legs by the pool in summer — professional waxing results at Soluna Vee Spa Colorado Springs

Summer in Colorado Springs means hiking trails, pool days, outdoor patios, and everything in between. It also means more skin on display — and for a lot of people, that means thinking about waxing for the first time, or getting back into a routine after the winter months.

Whether you're completely new to waxing or you've been doing it for years, there are things worth knowing before you book — especially in summer, when heat, sun exposure, and outdoor activity can affect how your skin responds to waxing. From an esthetician's perspective, a little preparation goes a long way toward a better experience and better results.

Here's everything you need to know before your summer waxing appointment at Soluna Vee Spa.

Why Summer Is Actually a Great Time to Start Waxing

A lot of people wait until right before a vacation or a big event to book their first wax — and while that works, starting a waxing routine at the beginning of summer is actually smarter. Here's why.

Waxing results improve with consistency. The first wax is almost always the most uncomfortable and the least smooth — because you're removing hair at different stages of growth. After 3 to 4 consistent appointments, hair grows back finer, sparser, and easier to remove. If you start now, by the peak of summer you'll be in a rhythm that makes every appointment faster, easier, and longer-lasting.

Starting early also means your skin has time to adjust. New waxing clients sometimes experience temporary redness or sensitivity after their first few appointments — completely normal, and it diminishes significantly with regular waxing. Getting those first appointments done before your busiest summer weeks means you're smooth and comfortable when it counts most.

How to Prepare for Your Waxing Appointment

Hair length matters

For waxing to work properly, hair needs to be at least a quarter inch long — about the length of a grain of rice. If you've been shaving, stop at least two to three weeks before your appointment. Hair that's too short won't adhere to the wax properly and you'll end up with uneven results or areas that need to be re-waxed, which increases skin irritation.

Exfoliate beforehand

Gently exfoliating the area 24 to 48 hours before your appointment helps remove dead skin cells that can trap hair beneath the surface. This reduces the likelihood of ingrown hairs and helps the wax grip the hair more effectively. Skip exfoliating the day of your appointment — you want the skin calm, not freshly stimulated.

Skip the sunscreen on the area being waxed

On the day of your appointment, avoid applying sunscreen, lotion, or oils to the area being waxed. Product on the skin creates a barrier that prevents the wax from adhering properly. Come with clean, dry skin for the best results.

Avoid sun exposure right before and after

Freshly waxed skin is sensitive and more vulnerable to UV damage. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 24 to 48 hours after your appointment — and in Colorado Springs, where UV intensity is higher due to our altitude, this is especially important. If you have a beach day or hiking trip planned, schedule your wax appointment a few days before, not the day of.

Time it around your cycle

If you're booking a bikini or Brazilian wax, your skin tends to be more sensitive in the days leading up to and during your menstrual cycle. Scheduling your appointment in the middle of your cycle — when sensitivity is lowest — typically makes for a more comfortable experience.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

At Soluna Vee Spa, waxing services are performed in a private, comfortable suite — not a shared room, not a curtained-off area. Your comfort and privacy are part of the experience from the moment you walk in.

Before waxing begins, the skin is cleansed and prepped. The wax is applied in the direction of hair growth and removed quickly in the opposite direction. For sensitive areas, hard wax — which adheres to the hair rather than the skin — is used to minimize discomfort and reduce irritation.

The appointment itself is typically much faster than first-timers expect. A full leg wax takes 30 to 45 minutes. A Brazilian takes 20 to 30 minutes for returning clients, slightly longer for first-timers. Brow waxing takes just minutes.

How to Care for Your Skin After Waxing

Keep it clean and cool

For the first 24 hours after waxing, avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and vigorous exercise that causes heavy sweating. Heat opens the follicle and increases the risk of irritation and breakouts on freshly waxed skin.

Skip the SPF on waxed areas immediately after

Wait at least 24 hours before applying sunscreen to freshly waxed skin. After that window, SPF is essential — especially in Colorado Springs summer sun. Freshly waxed skin is more photosensitive and can burn more easily than unwaxed skin.

Exfoliate regularly between appointments

Starting about 3 to 5 days after your wax, begin gently exfoliating the waxed area 2 to 3 times per week. This keeps dead skin cells from trapping the new hair growth beneath the surface and significantly reduces ingrown hairs — one of the most common concerns with regular waxing.

For the best results, waxing should be done every 4 to 6 weeks. Booking your next appointment before you leave ensures you stay on schedule and don't fall back into the shaving cycle between visits.
